7 ½ lakes, one incredible experience

Southern Carinthia isn’t home to just one lake. It boasts 7½ at once! What do they all have in common? They’re among the warmest swimming lakes in Europe, and each offers exceptional water quality. The most famous is, of course, the iconic Lake Klopeiner See. But the other six each have their own unique character, loyal following, and a wide range of activities to enjoy in, on, and around the water. As for the “½” lake, that’s our Völkermarkt Reservoir (Völkermarkter Stausee). Technically a river—the Drau (Drava)—it’s a true paradise for rowers, kayakers, and anglers. The lakes of southern Carinthia offer water of drinking quality and thus the best conditions for a carefree swimming experience.

The iconic Lake Klopeiner See

Welcome to the warmest swimming lake in Europe! The turquoise waters of Lake Klopeiner See make it the most famous of Southern Carinthia‘s 7 ½ lakes. Known for its wide range of water sports and activities in, on, and around the lake, it‘s a true all-rounder. Austria‘s only continuous lakeside promenade and the lake‘s excellent water quality make it ideal for swimming, strolling, sports, fishing, or simply relaxing at one of the many private and public beaches - each with its own unique charm.

Our Lake Kleinsee

Despite its name, Kleinsee (“Little Lake”) is anything but small in charm. Nestled at the foot of Mount Kitzelberg, this natural gem rests in the landscape as a quiet reminder of the last Ice Age. Its wide belt of reeds shelters plants, wildlife, and visitors seeking peace, making it a true paradise for anglers. For leisure cyclists, a loop around the lake is the perfect appetizer before tackling the larger Southern Carinthian bike tours. Well-marked trails also invite you to explore the area on foot, whether hiking, jogging, or Nordic walking.

Lake Gösselsdorfer See

Lake Gösselsdorfer See and the nearby Sablatnig Moor are classic fen lakes. Because nature is allowed to be wild here, they provide a valuable habitat for countless aquatic plants and animals. A campground and a clothing-optional resort are located right by the lake. And since athletes are also drawn to this natural stage, the Gösselsdorf Triathlon takes place here every July. Whether you prefer a leisurely rowboat ride or an outing along the beautiful hiking and cycling trails—every path leads to Lake Gösselsdorfer See.

Völkermarkter Reservoir

We’ll admit it—the “½” of our 7 ½ Southern Carinthian lakes is actually the Völkermarkt Reservoir, which in truth is a river, the Drava (Drau).
